Modernisme gem of 1900 on Passeig de Gràcia, redesigned by Puig i Cadafalch for chocolate magnate Antoni Amatller

Casa Amatller on Passeig de Gràcia is one of the masterworks of Catalan Modernisme and, together with Casa Batlló and Casa Lleó Morera, forms the famous "Block of Discord." Originally built in 1875, the building was completely transformed between 1898 and 1900 by architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch on commission from chocolate manufacturer Antoni Amatller. Puig i Cadafalch combined Flemish-inspired Gothic gables with Moorish tilework and sculptural facade elements into a strikingly original whole. The ground floor today houses the Instituto Amatller d'Art Hispànic and a boutique that keeps the family's chocolate history alive.
