Barcelona-Estació de França

Estació de França sits on the edge of the Barceloneta district and served as Barcelona's principal long-distance terminus until Sants gradually eclipsed it in the latter half of the 20th century. Inaugurated in 1929 for the International Exposition, the station's sweeping steel-and-glass train shed — supported by intricate cast-iron columns — ranks among the most architecturally impressive station halls on the Iberian Peninsula. Its name reflects its original purpose: for decades this was the main gateway to France, with overnight trains departing to Paris from its platforms. Today it handles regional services and a handful of long-distance trains, giving the grand concourse a calm, unhurried quality unusual for a working urban station. Diffuse light filtering through the glazed roof and the belle-époque ironwork create an atmosphere closer to a 19th-century exhibition pavilion than a modern transit hub.
