Casa Stefan Zweig

Greater Rio de Janeiro

The last home of Stefan Zweig in Petrópolis, Brazil, now a literary museum dedicated to the exiled Austrian writer.

The Casa Stefan Zweig is the last home of Austrian writer Stefan Zweig and his wife Lotte in Petrópolis, Brazil. Zweig fled Nazi Europe into exile and eventually settled here, where in 1942 he and his wife took their own lives in an act of despair at the state of the world. The house was acquired in 2006 by a nonprofit association and opened as a museum in 2012. Personal belongings, letters, and original furniture are on display. It is a quietly moving place for anyone familiar with Zweig''s literary legacy and the circumstances of his final years.
