Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge

The Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, also known as the Second Bosphorus Bridge, has linked European and Asian Istanbul since 1988, about five kilometers north of the first Bosphorus Bridge. It is a 1,510-meter suspension bridge with a 1,090-meter main span between two 105-meter pylons, and it carries the trans-European O-2 motorway, the principal artery for long-distance traffic between Europe and Anatolia. The bridge is named after Sultan Mehmed II, the conqueror of Constantinople. Construction was led by the British engineering firm Freeman Fox & Partners and Japan's IHI; the structure was completed in just three years. Only motor vehicles are allowed to cross; pedestrians and cyclists are prohibited.
