Fehntjer Tief und Umgebung

Fehntjer Tief is a protected nature reserve centered on a historic drainage canal south of Wiesmoor in East Frisia. The landscape bears the imprint of the Fehn tradition — a centuries-old system of peat-cutting canals that once served industrial turf extraction and today support reed beds, wet meadows, and a wide range of wading and water birds. Formally designated a nature reserve in 2000, the area forms part of a broader moorland conservation effort in Lower Saxony. Quiet dyke and canal paths are well-suited for walking and cycling, while the waterway itself is navigable by canoe. The reserve is particularly rewarding during autumn migration, offering birdwatching away from more frequented routes.
