Neoclassicism
The Fuente de Neptuno stands on Plaza Canovas del Castillo at the southern end of the Paseo del Prado and is a central work of Spanish Neoclassicism. Designed in 1777 by Ventura Rodriguez as part of Charles III's great urban scheme to turn the Paseo into an "Avenue of the Sciences", the sea god in his shell-chariot drawn by two hippocamps was carved by sculptors Juan Pascual de Mena and Jose Arias and completed in 1786. Since 2021 the whole Paseo del Prado together with the Buen Retiro has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In practice, the fountain is best known today as the rallying point for Atletico Madrid fans after every title.
