Royal Collections Gallery

Also known as: Galería de las Colecciones Reales, Royal Collections Museum

The Galeria de las Colecciones Reales is Madrid's newest major museum, opened in summer 2023 right between the Royal Palace and Almudena Cathedral on the western slope of the old city hill. The building, by architects Mansilla and Tunon, is a 120-metre slab of granite and travertine set into the old city wall, stepping with the gradient of the hill. It shows a cross-section of the Spanish crown holdings: tapestries, state coaches, armour, paintings by Velazquez, Caravaggio and Goya, and furniture from the Habsburg and Bourbon legacies, much of it previously scattered across royal palaces. A vast glazed wall in the main hall opens up the view across the Casa de Campo and the Manzanares riverside.
