Grini Museum

Memorial of Norway's largest Nazi camp – a powerful document of the occupation years.

The Grini Museum in the municipality of Bærum, southwest of Oslo, commemorates the largest Nazi concentration camp on Norwegian soil. The site was originally built in 1939 as a women's prison but was quickly repurposed after Germany's occupation of Norway in 1940. From 14 June 1941 the SS operated a concentration camp here, in which around 19,000 people were imprisoned until the end of the war – including resistance fighters, political prisoners and Jews. The museum documents the fate of the prisoners through original artefacts, photographs and personal testimonies, serving as a sober reminder of the crimes of the occupation era. A visit is an essential part of understanding Norway's wartime history.
