Former residence of the Siamese kings (1782) – magnificent palace complex with the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.
The Grand Palace – Phra Borom Maha Ratcha Wang in Thai – served as the official residence of the kings of Siam and Thailand from its founding in 1782 until the mid-20th century. The complex covers around 218,000 square metres and comprises a multitude of buildings, temples, pavilions and gardens in a unique blend of traditional Thai architecture and Western influences. At its heart lies the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew), which houses Thailand's most sacred Buddha image. Although the royal family no longer resides here, the palace continues to be used for important state ceremonies. For visitors it remains the architectural centrepiece of Bangkok and an unmissable experience.
