Ebara Hatakeyama Museum of Art

The Hatakeyama Kinenkan is a private art museum in Shirokanedai that opened in 1964 and shows utensils for the Japanese tea ceremony exclusively. Collector Hatakeyama Issei (1881-1971), president of the Ebara industrial conglomerate, inherited his passion for chanoyu from his father and over decades assembled first-rate sword tsubas, Korean Buncheong bowls, Chinese Tenmoku tea bowls and Muromachi-period ink paintings. Six of the objects are designated National Treasures. The museum building stands in the former Hatakeyama garden with two reconstructed teahouses, themed for rotating seasonal displays. Lucky visitors get a matcha tasting at the entrance. The house only opens during four exhibition periods a year.
