Tomb of Hatice Turhan Sultan

The mausoleum of Turhan Hatice Sultan in Eminonu belongs to the Yeni Cami complex, the New Mosque that Turhan completed in 1665. Turhan was chief consort of Ibrahim I and, as mother of the underage Mehmed IV after his deposition in 1648, de facto regent of the Ottoman Empire; alongside Kosem Sultan she is the only woman who ever officially shared power in the sultanate. The 1683 turbe holds Turhan and six other Ottoman sultans, among them Mehmed IV and Mustafa II. The interior is fully clad in Iznik tiles from the late phase of the great turquoise-cobalt production, making it one of Istanbul's richest Iznik interiors. Entry is free and crowds are modest.
