Hokes Mill Covered Bridge

The Hokes Mill Covered Bridge spans Second Creek in rural Greenbrier County, West Virginia, and is one of only two surviving covered bridges in the county. Constructed between 1897 and 1899, it stretches 81.6 feet long and 12 feet wide, with distinctive red board-and-batten siding and a standing seam metal roof that remain largely unchanged from the original build. Covered bridges of this type were roofed not to shelter travelers, as folklore often suggests, but to protect the load-bearing timber frame from rain and snow — significantly extending the structure's lifespan. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it sits quietly off the main roads, offering a rare glimpse of late 19th-century rural engineering in the Appalachian countryside.
