Jan Joosten van Lodensteijn Memorial Statue (B1)

The Jan Joosten memorial relief sits in an underground passage on the Yaesu side of Tokyo Station, in the district that owes its name to this Dutch sailor. Jan Joosten van Lodensteyn was washed ashore in Bungo in 1600 aboard the Dutch ship Liefde together with William Adams and went on, like Adams, to become an adviser to Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. He received land near today's Tokyo Station which later gave its name to the Yaesu neighbourhood. The current bronze plaque with ship motif and portrait was donated by the Netherlands-Japan Society in 1989 on the 400th anniversary of diplomatic ties. Anyone walking the Yaesu underground passage can see the modest memorial in a few minutes.
