Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum

The Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum sits in the Marunouchi business district just behind Tokyo Station, housed in a 2010 reconstruction of the very first Western-style brick building in the quarter. The 1894 original, designed by British architect Josiah Conder as an office for the Mitsubishi conglomerate, became a showpiece of Meiji modernisation. It was demolished in 1968 and rebuilt on the same plot with carefully reproduced facade and interiors. The collection focuses on 19th-century French art, with particular strength in Toulouse-Lautrec, Odilon Redon and Vallotton. The attached Cafe 1894 uses a restored bank counter and is a popular photo stop.
