Jewish Museum of Turkey

The Jewish Museum of Turkey in Karakoey opened on 25 November 2001, founded by the Quincentennial Foundation that 113 Turkish Jews and Muslims set up in 1989 to commemorate Sultan Bayezid II welcoming the Sephardim expelled from Spain in 1492. It originally occupied the former Zulfaris Synagogue; in 2015 it moved next door to the Neve Shalom Synagogue, today Istanbul's main shul. The exhibition spans seven centuries of Turkish Jewish life, from Ottoman ferman decrees and wedding ketubot to family photos from Galata. A dedicated section celebrates Ladino, the Judaeo-Spanish tongue the Sephardim carried with them.
