Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center

The Jewish Museum and Tolerance Centre in Moscow opened on 10 November 2012 inside a constructivist landmark, Konstantin Melnikov's Bakhmetevsky Bus Garage of 1926. New York studio Ralph Appelbaum, the firm behind the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, filled the 8,500 square metres with twelve multimedia galleries tracing Russian Jewry from the shtetl through pogroms, revolution, Gulag and Soviet aliyah. Highlights include a 4D cinema on Jewish history and a table where a virtual rabbi answers Talmudic questions. The research wing holds the Schneerson Lubavitch library, long a flashpoint in US-Russia cultural disputes.
