Kamakura-Gu Shrine

Kamakura-gu is a Shinto shrine in the east of Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, founded in 1869 by Emperor Meiji. It enshrines Prince Morinaga, son of Emperor Go-Daigo, who was held captive in a cave here during the Kenmu Restoration conflict and murdered in 1335. The plain stone cave that served as his prison still survives behind the shrine and is now a place of pilgrimage. The shrine is also known as Otonomiya or Daitonomiya. Visitors come especially in autumn when the maples in the grove turn red.
