Military Museum's Manege

The Manege is the branch of the Finnish Military Museum on Iso Mustasaari island within the UNESCO-listed Suomenlinna sea fortress off Helsinki. The long yellow brick building was erected in 1881 as a riding hall for the tsarist garrison that manned what was then Russian territory. Today the hall displays artillery pieces, tanks, a coastal-defence cannon and uniforms from the history of Finnish national defence, with emphasis on Suomenlinna's role in the 1918 Civil War and the World Wars. Visitors arrive by ferry from the Market Square in about fifteen minutes and usually combine the museum with a walk over the fortress casemates, dry docks and bastions. Opening hours are restricted in winter.
