St Mark's Campanile on Piazza San Marco is the tallest structure in Venice at 98.6 metres. Its origins lie in the medieval period, when it served as both a lighthouse for ships navigating the lagoon and a watchtower. In 1902 the tower suddenly collapsed, fortunately without casualties. It was rebuilt identically and reopened in 1912 with the famous dedication dov era com era (as it was, where it was). Taking the lift to the top offers a sweeping panorama over the entire lagoon, the Doge's Palace, and the domes of St Mark's Basilica — one of the finest views in Venice and arguably in all of Europe.
