Piazza San Marco

Piazza San Marco is the ceremonial and historic center of Venice, framed on three sides by the Renaissance arcades of the Procuratie and anchored by the Byzantine-Romanesque Basilica di San Marco. The square took shape gradually from the 9th century onward, accumulating layers of Byzantine, Gothic, and Renaissance architecture into a single composition that remained the symbolic seat of the Serenissima republic for nearly a thousand years. The basilica's interior is sheathed in over 8,000 square meters of gold-ground mosaics, and its high altar conceals the relics of St Mark, smuggled out of Alexandria in 828 by Venetian merchants. The freestanding Campanile, which spectacularly collapsed in 1902 and was faithfully rebuilt by 1912, offers a 99-meter panorama over the lagoon city. The piazza is regularly inundated during acqua alta — a phenomenon now managed by raised walkways — while Caffè Florian, open since 1720, still serves espresso beneath its gilded mirrors on the south arcade.
