Rialto Bridge

The Rialto Bridge spans the Grand Canal on a single stone arch with a clear span of 28.8 meters, completed in 1591 as the first permanent crossing at this point. The commission went to Antonio da Ponte after a celebrated design contest that reputedly included submissions from Michelangelo and Palladio. Its engineering is quietly extraordinary: each abutment rests on a foundation of 6,000 timber piles driven into the Venetian lagoon floor, a solution that has held the structure stable for over four centuries. The bridge functions simultaneously as passageway and covered arcade — two rows of small shops line its central walkway, historically occupied by goldsmiths and silk merchants, now mostly jewelers and souvenir sellers. From the apex of the arch, the view sweeps along the Grand Canal in both directions, one of the most recognizable urban vistas in Europe.
