Masjid Sultan

Masjid Sultan is Singapore's most important mosque and the spiritual heart of the historic Malay quarter of Kampong Glam, between Muscat Street and North Bridge Road. The present building opened in 1928 to a design by Irish architect Denis Santry in the Saracenic Indian style, replacing an earlier 1824 mosque that Sultan Hussein Shah of Johor had built with support from the British East India Company. Its two golden domes rest on a band of thousands of glass bottle ends donated by poorer Muslims of the community - a gesture unique to Singapore. The mosque was declared a national monument in 1975. It accommodates up to 5,000 worshippers; non-Muslims are welcome outside prayer hours and may view the prayer hall from the lobby.
