Old Mosque (Edirne)

The Old Mosque in Edirne was completed in 1414, when the city was still capital of the Ottoman Empire and Istanbul had not yet been conquered. It is one of the oldest surviving Ottoman buildings on European soil and follows the multi-dome scheme of early Ottoman mosques, with nine equal domes resting on four piers. The patron was Sultan Mehmed I, who restored imperial unity after the Ottoman Interregnum. The interior is famous for its oversized calligraphy panels, some with letters several meters tall. Visitors today find a quiet prayer hall away from the tourist flow around the more famous Selimiye Mosque nearby. Up close the monumental script reads almost like wall painting. Edirne itself was a political center in the 15th century, and that weight is still tangible here.
