Mossovet Theatre

Academic drama theatre on Triumfalnaya Square, founded in 1923 as the Theatre of the Moscow City Soviet (Mossovet). The ensemble is one of the cornerstone stages of Soviet theatre history and was for decades shaped by directors such as Yuri Zavadsky, a pupil of Stanislavski and Vakhtangov. The company moved into its present home in the Aquarium Garden in 1959, staging both classic Russian drama and Soviet contemporary plays. Its most celebrated productions include works by Bulgakov, Dostoevsky and Brecht. Today the Mossovet plays to full houses, mixing Russian classics with European repertoire. Visitors who read Russian or look for a busy mainstream premiere find one of Moscow's liveliest stages outside the Bolshoi and the Moscow Art Theatre.
