The Deutsches Schauspielhaus in the St. Georg district of Hamburg seats around 1,200 and is Germany's largest spoken-word theatre and one of the most beautiful theatre houses in the German-speaking world. Founded in 1900 by a private citizens' initiative and the Deutsches Schauspielhaus joint-stock company, the neo-Baroque building by the Vienna firm Fellner und Helmer - architects of theatres from Odessa to Zurich - opened in 1901, modelled on the Vienna Volkstheater. Heyday under Gustaf Gruendgens in the 1950s, today run as a progressive repertory house under rotating directors. Right next to the main station - ten steps from platform to foyer.
