Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo

The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, known as MOT, opened in 1995 on the edge of Kiba Park in Koto Ward as the city's main municipal venue for contemporary art. Shoji Yanagisawa's three-storey entry hall opens onto a sculpture garden and long gallery axes that absorb shifting large-scale installations. The collection holds around 5,500 works of Japanese and international art since 1945, including pieces by Yayoi Kusama, On Kawara, Jasper Johns, and Gerhard Richter. After a long refurbishment, it reopened in 2019 with full step-free access, a research library, and a restaurant by chef Tatsuro Hiratsuka. Manga and anime shows regularly draw queues. From the park you can walk canal paths all the way to the Sumida River.
