National Museum of Japanese History

The National Museum of Japanese History sits on the grounds of the former Sakura Castle in Chiba Prefecture, founded in 1981 and opened in 1983. It belongs to Japan's Inter-University Research Institute Corporation, which means it operates less like a showcase and more like a working research lab. Six permanent sections walk visitors from the prehistoric Jomon era through medieval villages, Edo-period merchant streets and the Showa years, drawing on a collection of roughly 220.000 objects. Reconstructed farmhouses, rice paddies and life-size village lanes let you step into daily life rather than peer at it behind glass. The surrounding Sakura Castle Park holds more than a thousand cherry trees, turning April visits into a quietly local hanami without Tokyo's crowds.
