Dumbarton Oaks

Dumbarton Oaks is a Federal-style estate in Washington's Georgetown neighbourhood that Mildred and Robert Woods Bliss gave to Harvard University in 1940. It holds one of the most important Byzantine collections outside Europe, alongside a top-tier pre-Columbian collection in a pavilion by Philip Johnson. In 1944 it hosted the Dumbarton Oaks Conference, which drafted the framework of the future United Nations Charter. The ten-hectare garden, planned over two decades by landscape architect Beatrix Farrand, frames the estate. Museum and gardens are open to the public on separate schedules.
