Nieuwmarkt

Nieuwmarkt is a broad historic square in Amsterdam's old city center, anchored by the Waag — a 1488 gatehouse repurposed as a weighing house and guild hall. In the 17th century the building hosted public anatomy lessons by surgeon Nicolaes Tulp, an event immortalized by Rembrandt's 'The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp.' During the Nazi occupation the square served as a staging point for the deportation of Jewish residents from the surrounding neighborhood. Today the square is flanked by brown cafés, Chinese restaurants from the adjacent Chinatown district, and a weekend antiques and organic market that draws locals more than tourists.
