Westerkerk

Westerkerk on the Prinsengracht is the largest Protestant church in the Netherlands, completed in 1631 to a design by Amsterdam's city architect Hendrick de Keyser and finished by his son Pieter after his death. The tower — known locally as the Westertoren — rises 85 meters and is crowned by the imperial crown of Maximilian I, granted to the city of Amsterdam as a coat-of-arms symbol in 1489. Rembrandt van Rijn was buried here in 1669, though his exact grave within the church has never been conclusively identified. The 54-bell carillon rings on the hour and carries across the Jordaan neighborhood below. Visitors can climb the tower with a guide for views over Amsterdam's concentric canal rings, while the church itself remains an active Reformed congregation holding regular Sunday services.
