piazzale Michelangelo

Piazzale Michelangelo is a broad hilltop terrace on the south bank of the Arno offering one of Italy's most celebrated urban panoramas: Brunelleschi's dome, the Palazzo Vecchio tower, and a succession of bridges frame a view that has defined the image of Florence for over 150 years. The square was designed by architect Giuseppe Poggi and completed in 1869, conceived during an era of Haussmann-inspired urban transformation when Florence served briefly as the capital of the newly unified Kingdom of Italy. At its center stands a bronze replica of Michelangelo's David, a deliberate iconographic anchor that gives the square its name. The terrace is especially magnetic around sunset, when the warm light turns the terracotta roofscape amber and both locals and visitors gather to watch the city glow. The site is fully wheelchair accessible.
