Piazza Piave

Piazza Piave sits at the eastern edge of Florence's historic centre, where the 19th-century ring road meets the north bank of the Arno. Its centrepiece is the Torre della Zecca Vecchia, a surviving medieval tower of the old city walls. The square carries a largely invisible layer of history: the 1565 Buonsignori map records the space where Via Tripoli meets Via dei Malcontenti as the "Sepolture dei Giudei" — a former Jewish burial ground, long since paved over. The square itself was named after the Battles of the Piave from World War I. Today it functions primarily as a busy traffic junction linking five roads, but rewards anyone attentive to the layered urban history embedded beneath the asphalt.
