Protestant Cemetery, Rome

The Protestant Cemetery in Rome, officially the Cimitero Acattolico, lies beneath the Pyramid of Cestius in the Testaccio district and from 1821 has taken in those who could not be buried in the city as non-Catholics. Among the pines and cypresses are around 4,000 graves, including those of the English Romantics John Keats (1821), inscribed "Here lies one whose name was writ in water", and Percy Bysshe Shelley (1822), whose heart rests beneath his memorial. The Italian Marxist Antonio Gramsci, Goethe's son August, the poet Gregory Corso and numerous diplomats are also buried here. A foundation maintains the site on entrance donations; it is open Monday to Saturday from 9 am, free with a suggested donation of three euros.
