Rakotzbrücke

The Rakotzbrücke spans the Rakotzsee in the Kromlau azalea and rhododendron park with a semicircular arch so precise that bridge and reflection together form a perfect circle — a deliberate illusion engineered into the 19th-century romantic landscape garden design. Its folk name, Teufelsbrücke (Devil's Bridge), echoes the old legend that a flawless arch of this kind could only be completed with diabolical assistance. Basalt columns and artificial rocky outcrops line the banks, heightening the otherworldly atmosphere. Now a protected cultural monument in Saxony, the bridge can no longer be walked across — making the view from the lakeshore the main event, especially during the azalea bloom in May or on clear full-moon nights when the stone circle appears almost unbroken on the still water.
