Silesian Theatre

The Silesian Theatre on Katowice's central Ring square is the largest theatre in the Upper Silesia region and one of Poland's foremost cultural institutions. It opened in 1907 as the Deutsches Theater, built when Katowice — then Kattowitz — was still part of the Prussian province of Silesia, giving the building a layered German-Polish urban identity that mirrors the city's own complex history. Surviving two world wars and the postwar shift to Polish administration, the theatre has been a continuous cultural anchor through every political chapter of the 20th century. Today it stages a broad repertoire of drama, musical theatre, and contemporary productions in its imposing Wilhelmine-era building at the heart of the city center.
