Apollonia

About Apollonia

Apollonia sits on the Mediterranean coast of northeastern Libya, in the Green Mountain region, and served in antiquity as the port city of the major Greek colonial settlement of Cyrene. The extensive archaeological site preserves remains from Greek, Roman, and Byzantine periods, including the ruins of several churches — among them the Eastern Church and the Central Church — as well as a triumphal arch and ancient warehouses. A mosque serves the present-day settlement alongside the ruins. The site suits visitors with an interest in ancient Mediterranean history.
