Fribourg sits on a sandstone peninsula above the Sarine river in the Swiss Plateau, roughly 30 kilometres south of Bern. The city of around 39,000 inhabitants is the capital of the canton of the same name and is officially bilingual, with both French and German in everyday use. Its well-preserved medieval old town rises steeply above the river. Quieter corners worth seeking out include the Parc des Grand-Places, the Bourbaki monument, and the pilgrimage chapel of La Grotte des Lourdes on the city's edge.
