Naples, the capital of the Campania region in southern Italy, is one of the country's largest cities, home to nearly one million people. Situated on the Gulf of Naples with Mount Vesuvius on the horizon, it has been continuously inhabited for thousands of years and stands as a cultural hub of the Italian south. The surrounding area is home to the ancient archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum, both buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. Naples is also widely recognized as the birthplace of Neapolitan pizza, and its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
