Carmine Castle

The Castello del Carmine was a medieval fortress in the Mercato district, the historic popular quarter near Naples' harbor. Built in 1382 under Charles III of Anjou-Durazzo, it stood for over five centuries before being entirely demolished in 1906 to make way for the Corso Garibaldi, a major new thoroughfare driven through the eastern city center as part of early 20th-century urban modernization. Nothing of the structure survives above ground today — the site is occupied by a busy arterial road. The castle's erasure illustrates the sweeping, often irreversible changes Naples underwent during the Belle Époque redevelopment campaigns that reshaped its medieval street fabric.
