Niigata sits on the Sea of Japan coast in Niigata Prefecture on Honshū and, with a population of around 790,000, ranks among the larger cities on Japan's western seaboard. It serves as the prefecture's administrative and economic hub and is widely associated with high-quality rice cultivation and sake production.
