Those wanting to escape the city noise do not need to travel far in this region. Monte Cavo in the Alban Hills offers sweeping views across the plain, putting the capital at a comfortable distance. The Botanical Garden offers botanical calm right in the urban fabric, while Monte Soratte — a striking limestone formation north of the city — was already a place of retreat for Horace. Even the Ponte degli Angeli, primarily a monument of history, sits close enough to the Tiber that you feel the river beneath you with the dome silhouetted behind. Nature and city are not opposites here.
