Nature in Paris

Paris is more densely built than its garden-city reputation suggests, which makes its green retreats all the more startling when you stumble into them. The Fontaine Médicis in the Jardin du Luxembourg sits like a forgotten water-theatre beneath plane trees, carp holding still in the long basin while the city noise drains away. The Parc de Belleville climbs one of the steepest hills in the city and pays back the effort with a wide horizon — the Eiffel Tower reduced to a distant sliver. Deeper east, the Parc Floral de Paris spreads across a corner of the Bois de Vincennes, half-wild at its edges and generous with space. And Montmartre still keeps a small vineyard, a quiet reminder that Paris grew grapes long before it grew grand boulevards.
