The Cistercian nunnery of Solières was founded in 1229 in Ben-Ahin, near Huy in the province of Liège, and operated for over five centuries as an active community of Cistercian nuns. In 1796 it was dissolved under the secularizing legislation of the French Revolutionary administration, ending its monastic life. The surviving structure, catalogued as a historic monument, reflects the deliberately austere architectural language of the Cistercian order — plain massing, minimal ornament. Today the site retains a quiet, withdrawn character, with its surrounding grounds offering a contemplative atmosphere markedly different from the busier abbeys of the Meuse valley.
