Abtei Marienstatt

Abtei Marienstatt, nestled in the Nister valley four kilometres from Hachenburg in the Westerwald, is the only continuously inhabited Cistercian monastery in the German dioceses west of the Rhine. Founded in 1212 by Cistercian monks from Heisterbach, it grew into an important Marian pilgrimage site throughout the medieval period. The 13th-century Gothic abbey church is one of the most significant early Gothic structures in Rhineland-Palatinate, displaying characteristic Cistercian restraint: plain capitals, clear proportions, and minimal decorative stonework. The monastery remains an active Benedictine community today, running a shop selling homemade goods and a small brewery. Visitors can attend daily services with Gregorian chant and use the tranquil valley setting for quiet reflection.
