Abbaye de Grandpré

The former Cistercian abbey of Grandpré was founded in 1231 and sits in deliberate seclusion in the valley of the Samson stream, within the Walloon municipality of Gesves some 16 kilometres southeast of Namur. Its location exemplifies the Cistercian founding principle of building in quiet, watered valleys away from human settlement — a conscious rejection of the ornate Cluniac monasteries of the era, reflected in the austere Romanesque style of the original structures. The abbey is now classified as a Walloon cultural monument. Visitors who make the journey encounter a historically charged, largely undisturbed landscape of forest and stream that conveys the contemplative atmosphere the Cistercian monks sought when they chose this valley nearly 800 years ago.
