Above All State Park

Above All State Park sits atop a wooded ridge in Warren Township, Connecticut, and is one of the most undeveloped state parks in the region — no trail markers, no restrooms, no visitor facilities of any kind. Founded in 1927, the land was repurposed in 1957 as the New Preston Gap-Filler RADAR Annex P-50A/Z-50A, a Cold War air-surveillance installation operated by the military until 1968. When the military withdrew, the site reverted to parkland but the concrete foundations and remnants of the defense infrastructure were left in place. Visitors who navigate the informal hilltop paths today encounter these silent Cold War relics scattered through the forest — an unexpected piece of mid-century military history hiding in the Connecticut woods.
