Schauenberg Castle
The Schauenberg Castle ruin crowns a wooded hilltop at 892 meters above sea level in the Zurich Oberland, above the villages of Elgg and Turbenthal, and is protected as a regionally significant Swiss cultural heritage site. The surviving masonry remnants of this medieval hilltop fortification give a sense of its former defensive purpose, though the precise history of its founding and abandonment remains only partially documented. The hike up rewards visitors with open views across the rolling hills and villages of the Zurich Oberland. Its combination of accessible woodland trails, castle ruins, and sweeping vistas makes it a quiet day-trip destination well off the urban radar.
