Aartalbahn

The Aartalbahn — also known as the Langenschwalbacher Bahn — runs roughly 74 kilometres from Wiesbaden through the Taunus hills and the Aar valley to Diez on the Lahn river. Opened in the 1880s as a Wilhelmine resort railway, it connected the fashionable spa towns of Bad Schwalbach and Langenschwalbach to the Rhine-Main region; Empress Victoria, daughter of Queen Victoria, travelled it regularly on her way to Schloss Kronberg. Passenger services wound down between 1983 and 2003, and the entire line was placed under heritage protection — tracks, stone viaducts, and station buildings have been left largely untouched ever since. The former trackbed now serves as a quiet hiking and cycling route threading through mixed forest and narrow valleys, where moss-covered platforms and rusting signals give the corridor its distinctive frozen-in-time atmosphere. Museum train operations towards Hahn-Wehen station are currently being prepared by Aartalbahn Infrastruktur gGmbH.
