Abu Abdallah al-Rudaki

The monument to Abu Abdallah al-Rudaki in Khujand commemorates the poet widely regarded as the father of New Persian literature, who flourished at the Samanid court in Bukhara during the 9th and early 10th centuries. Rudaki was the first major poet to systematically elevate Persian as a literary language, laying the foundation for a tradition that would later produce Hafez and Rumi. The vast majority of his output — once estimated at hundreds of thousands of verses — has been lost to history, with only a few hundred lines surviving today.
