Academia Petrina

The Academia Petrina was the oldest institution of higher learning on the territory of present-day Latvia, established in 1775 in Mitau (now Jelgava) by Duke Peter von Biron of Courland and Semigallia. Founded during the height of the Enlightenment, it attracted scholars from across the Baltic German intellectual sphere and served as the cultural and academic hub of the Duchy of Courland. The institution survived with an interrupted history until 1944, when its formal existence ended amid the upheavals of World War II. Its legacy continues in a technical secondary school in Jelgava, while the original building now operates as a museum.
